The Secret Behind Believing in Yourself

Have you ever tried to change a habit or belief you have about yourself only to hit a big brick wall.

You set out with the best of intentions and fall flat on your face. Do you know why this is?

That’s what we’re shedding some light on today.

It’s the way your brain was created.

There are many parts to your brain but for today, we’re going to talk about 3 key areas.

1) Your Critter Brain

This is your brain stem. It’s often referred to as your cave man brain.

Have you ever watched the movie “The Croods”? In the beginning of the movie, the family was living in a cave and they were scared to leave the cave. As the movie progresses, they venture out of the cave but it isn’t without fear of the unknown.

This is the best illustration of the function of the brain stem. Its main concern is keeping you alive. It likes things to remain the same. For the brain stem, change = death… whether or not it really does, doesn’t much matter to it.

2) The Emotional Centre

This is your limbic system.

The limbic system creates an emotion to go along with whatever the brain stem is telling it. When it comes to creating change in your life, that is often fear, overwhelm or some other emotion that we perceive as negative.

3) The Human Brain

This is your cortex.

This part of your brain is responsible for creating meaning out of the emotion being created by the limbic system and the signals from the brain stem.

So, if you’re attempting to make a change in your life, this will often look like…

Brain stem: “No, if I change, so and so won’t like me”
Limbic system: produces feelings of fear or overwhelm
Cortex: “If I change, I’ll be rejected. I need to be accepted. I won’t change.”

There is some good news though, there is a way that you can trick your brain stem into allowing change to happen.
