FAQ: Are Essential Oils SAFE for my baby?

This is a question that every mama new to oils has asked. It’s a legit question. I know when I had my daughter and I still didn’t know much about oils I was extremely cautious.

Looking back now, I know why. It’s simply because there isn’t a commercial on tv telling me that I should buy them. They aren’t (or haven’t been) talked about in the mainstream. They’re new and different so it’s only natural that we’re cautious.

Essential oils are something you have to know how to research. You need to know how to tell a credible source from someone spreading lies. And let’s be honest, not many of us new moms have time for that. But that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing… so you don’t have to :)

So, I searched high and low for the answers I needed to know that I was doing the right thing for my daughter. This is what I have found: Just like anything else, you need to be careful. It’s a fact that too much of anything can be bad. So here are four rules that I follow with my babies and it hasn’t lead me astray (mind you, everyone’s body is different, what works for me and my family.. might not work for yours)

  1. Our little ones skin is more permeable than ours. That means that it is more sensitive and soaks things up quicker… don’t use straight oils on their skin. A pure oil is too potent for their body.
  2. Quality matters: Its super important to know about the quality of the oil you are using. A 7 dollar bottle of lavender from your favourite drugstore is not the same quality as a 20 dollar bottle.
  3. It’s not recommended to use oils topically on a child under the age of 1 so, if you must, it’s always a good idea to use a carrier oil, like coconut or vegetable oil. These slow the rate the body can absorb the essential oil.
  4. Find resources you LOVE: A fantastic resource that I love is Betsy Bosom’s Baby Book. In it, she talks about oily safety tips for using oils with our little ones. She also talks about how to dilute the oils and which oils are safe to use. If you’d like a copy of the book, here’s a link for amazon.
